Though rarely deployed in direct combat, Tirpitz did see action in 1943 when she bombarded Allied positions on Spitzbergen alongside Scharnhorst. For the British, neutralizing Tirpitz became an obsession, leading to a series of daring attacks, including mini-submarine raids and large-scale bombing missions. Ultimately, in 1944, she was sunk by Lancaster bombers using 12,000 lb Tallboy bombs.
